Powder room and guest toilet walls: decorative finishes for the dry zones
6 min read · 26 Oct 2026

In a powder room or guest toilet, decorative plaster and metallic finishes work best on the dry walls: around and above the mirror, behind the door and on walls away from the basin and WC. The splash zone directly behind the tap needs a hard, water-resistant surface such as stone, tile or glass, unless the product's technical data sheet confirms it can take that use.
Thai searches for this include ตกแต่งห้องน้ำแขก and ห้องน้ำขนาดเล็ก. This guide covers the zones in a guest toilet, five finish ideas for the dry walls, lighting and colour, and what to plan before the plasterer arrives. It deals with rooms without a shower. For bathrooms with a shower, read our tadelakt bathroom guide.
Why the powder room is the place to be bold
A guest toilet is small, closed and visited for a few minutes at a time. That makes it a good room to take a risk with a deep colour, a metallic or a strong texture. The area is small, so the cost of a premium finish stays contained, and guests see it up close under good light.
Map the zones before choosing a finish
| Zone | What happens there | Practical approach |
|---|---|---|
| Behind the tap and basin | Direct splashes, soap, toothpaste | Stone or tile upstand, glass panel, or a finish whose TDS confirms splash use |
| Behind the WC | Occasional splashes, frequent cleaning | Check the TDS or ask Dyno; a stone or tile dado is the safe option |
| Mirror wall above the splashback | Light humidity, rarely touched | Decorative plaster or metallic |
| Side walls, door wall, ceiling | Dry | Any interior decorative finish |
A simple rule: if water lands on the wall every day, protect it with a hard surface. Everything else can be the feature.
Five finish ideas for the dry walls
1. A tadelakt look
Archi+ Tadelakt is a natural hydraulic lime plaster that recreates the smooth, softly polished look of Moroccan tadelakt on interior walls, with a gentle depth and natural glow. In a powder room it flows around corners and up to the ceiling with no grout lines. Its product page describes interior walls; for use near water, check the technical data sheet with Dyno.
2. Satin marmorino in a deep tone
Marmorino KS is a lime finish of seasoned lime putty and fine marble powder that can be worked into cloudy effects or a smooth satin surface. In a deep green, oxblood or charcoal it turns a small room into a jewel box. See Venetian plaster and marmorino.
3. Real metal on one wall
Metallo_Fuso uses selected metal alloy powders bound in a two-component epoxy resin to turn interior walls into real metal. It comes in Tin, Copper, Brass and Bronze and is hand-applied over its dedicated base coat. Brass or copper behind a mirror, lit from the edges, is a striking powder room wall.
4. A soft shimmer
Luce Wall Painting is a ready-to-use textured interior coating with selected metallic particles that create a soft play of light and shade. It suits a powder room where luxury should feel quiet. More metallic options are in our metallic wall finishes guide.
5. Warm terracotta
Materia Viva Cocciopesto mixes crushed brick and tile into a lime-based base for interior walls, with warm terracotta fragments showing through the texture. It pairs well with a stone basin, brass taps and plants.
Lighting a small room
- Light the face, then the wall. A single downlight overhead casts shadows under the eyes. Use a backlit mirror or wall lights either side, and let that light graze the finish.
- Use warm white. Warm light flatters skin, brass and lime. Very cool light makes deep colours look flat.
- Light the ceiling if it is finished too. In a dark jewel-box room, a finished ceiling with a soft uplight makes the space feel taller.
Colour ideas
- Deep and enclosing. Forest green, aubergine or charcoal with brass fittings.
- Warm and earthy. Terracotta, clay and sand with a stone basin and timber vanity.
- Light and calm. Warm white tadelakt look with natural stone and linen towels, for small rooms without a window.
Hold the sample next to the basin, the tap finish and the floor tile before deciding. See choosing wall finish colours.
Plan before the plasterer arrives
- Ventilation. Fit or check the exhaust fan. A small room with no window needs it.
- Damp check. Leaking pipes in a shared wall show up as stains later. Read damp walls before finishing.
- Fixings. Fix the mirror, towel ring and paper holder positions first. Drilling a finished wall later risks chipping.
- Old tiles. If the walls are tiled now, read renovating walls over tiles before you plan to plaster over them.
- Cleaning. Ask for the cleaning and protection guidance in the TDS. See caring for decorative walls.
Getting it done in Thailand
Dyno is the official Novacolor distributor in Thailand and also supplies Modern Masters metal effects. You can see lime and metallic samples at the showroom in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan, Monday to Friday 08:00 to 17:00. Bring a photo of your basin and tap finish.
Dyno's own crews work across Thailand and can supply and apply. Small rooms still need careful edges and corners, so a sample on site is worth doing; see samples and mock-ups. Pricing is quoted on request. Contact 02-738-4111, LINE @dynopaints or marketing@dynopaints.com.
Frequently asked questions
Can decorative plaster go behind a basin?
The area directly behind the tap gets splashed every day, so a stone, tile or glass upstand is the safe choice. Use a decorative finish there only if its technical data sheet confirms that use.
Can I use Archi+ Tadelakt in a shower?
Its product page describes interior walls and does not state shower use. Check the technical data sheet with Dyno before planning it near water.
Is a dark colour a good idea in a small guest toilet?
Often yes. A deep colour makes the walls recede and the room feel enclosed and intimate, especially with warm wall lights and brass fittings.
Which finish gives real metal on a wall?
Metallo_Fuso uses metal alloy powders in a two-component epoxy resin, in Tin, Copper, Brass and Bronze, for interior walls.
